Ezra was a carpet weaver by trade. He was drafted into the Civil War for a nine-month enlistment on 16 Oct 1862 along with his nephew James A Hartline (1841-1918) and cousin Solomon Hartline (1836-1863). All three men were mustered into the 167th Pennsylvania Infantry, Company C, on 12 Nov 1862. They spent most of their service in and around Suffolk, Virginia. Ezra and James were mustered out at Reading, Pennsylvania, 11 Aug 1863. Solomon had died four weeks earlier while the regiment was passing through Washington, DC.

Ezra's only two children, eight-year-old Emma Rebecca Hartline (1854-1862) and six-year-old James Buchanan Hartline (1856-1862), died three days apart, suggesting illness.
