LaVerne Robert Dempsey, second child of Frank and Ethel Sturtevant Dempsey, was born September 12, 1908, and departed this life October 17, 1989. at the Jewell County Hospital Mankato, at the age of 81.
Verne attended grade school at Pleasant Valley and graduated from high school at Montrose Rural High School.
During LaVerne's early years, he operated a grocery store and a gasoline station in Mankato. Eventually, this was sold and in 1931 he and Quincy Sills ran a grocery store in Gretna, Kansas. During this time, Quincy met and married Verne's sister, Madeline.
In 1934, LaVerne and his brother, Lyle, and two cousins, Andrew and Normy Stafford, went to Phoenix, Arizona, to pick fruit. Verne and Normy wanted to go home sooner than the others, so they hopped a freight train and ended up in California instead of Kansas. In California, they were discovered and kicked off the train; eventually, they rode back to Kansas with Louie Rightmier.
In 1936 Verne started his many years of farming. His first years of farming were done on his grandfather Sturtevant's land south of Formoso.
On June 6, 1937, LaVerne Robert and Ethel Maxine Rominger were married. Their first home was on the Sturtevant farm where their first two children, Connie and Janis, were born In 1946, they moved to their present home and welcomed Wayne and Linda.
In 1987, LaVerne and Maxine celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in Estes Park Colorado. All the children and grandchildren were present for the weeklong family get together. The vacation was a gift from their children and it was one of the 'highlights', of their marriage.
LaVerne was a devout and active member of the Montrose Church. He served on the church board for many years.
During grade school, Verne accepted the Lord as his Savior during a Rose Evangelistic meeting. His grandmother, Emma Dempsey, had taken Verne and some of his siblings to the meeting in Mankato.
Verne actively served on the Jewell County ASCS committee for many years, as well as the school boards for Montrose and Formoso.
Survivors include his Wife, Maxine of the home; a son, Wayne of Mankato; three daughters, Connie Russell of St. John, Janis Philo of McCook, Neb., and Linda Benson of McPherson three brothers, Lyle of Nampa, Idaho Marr of Mankato and Forrest of Formoso; three sisters, Madeline Sills of Formoso, Iva Lee Huffman of Warren, Ore., and Maxine Beal of Portland, Ore.; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services for LaVerne Dempsey were held Monday, October 23, 1989, at 10:30 a.m. from the Montrose United Methodist Church with Pastor George Sills and Pastor Richard Zimmerman officiating. Music was provided by Pastor Richard Zimmerman with Mrs. Billie Kitts accompanying him. Casket bearers were: Jim Page, Edwin Dunstan, LaVerne Haegert, Dale Rothchild, Charles Jacobson, and George Balch. Honorary bearers were: Bradley Keeler and Melvin Boyer. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Formoso, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the Montrose United Methodist Church or to the Jewell County Hospital. Kramer Funeral home Mankato, Kansas, was in charge of arrangements.
