Kevin Wheeler Sharpe, 26, of Carthage, died Friday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston of injuries he suffered when his ultralight aircraft, a one-seater Weedhopper, crashed at Panola County Airport on Thursday, July 15.

Sharpe, an electrical contractor, was also an experienced pilot. But he lost control of his aircraft while attempting to land the craft. It was the first fatal crash ever at Panola County Airport. He was taken to Panola General Hospital but was almost immediately sent on to Longview Regional with severe head injuries. Sharpe was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston Monday, where he remained until his death.

Sharpe is survived by his wife, Debbie, and his son, Kory, all of Carthage.

He is also survived by his mother, Joyce; two brothers, Rod and Patrick; a sister, Mrs. Toni Smith; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Z. Wheeler. All of the above are Carthage residents.

Sharpe was a 23-year resident of Panola County, having come here from Harrison County.

The craft he was piloting when he crashed was an ultralight aircraft: it resembled a hang glider with a propeller and a small lawnmower engine on the front. Since the pilot's feet are used to launch and land the craft, the Federal Aviation Administration does not require the pilot to be certified.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 at Central Baptist Church in Carthage. Interment will be at the Restland Memorial Park in Carthage. The Rev. Marshall McQueen and Dr. Charles Dodson will be officiating.
