Dr. Joseph Rockwell was the only local physican for about 50 yrs. In 1834 when he married Elizabeth Mills, they went to Goshen, Conn., where they lived for 1 yr, then they were 7 yrs. in Ohio where Dr. Rockwell practiced medicine. He established a practice in Southwick in 1842.
Dr. Rockwell was not only a physician for Southwick & all the surrounding towns, but he was very active in town & church affairs. He was Justice of the Peace for many years, led the church choir (stood up in front of them & beat the time), and was deacon of the Congregational Church.
His daughter, Helen, who was born in 1850, married Thomas Cooley in 1872.
He also had a son who died at sea in 1856 when he was 18 yrs old.
