"Thomas Baker was born on October 24, 1789, near Salisbury, Maryland, coming to Dearborn county with his parents in 1809. He was married in 1811 to Rachel Powell, daughter of Nathan and Sarah Powell, who settled in Hogan township at an early day. The parents of Thomas Baker pre-empted land from the government during the time of Thomas Jefferson. Mr. Baker followed farming all his life, and was a soldier in the War of 1812. To this union were born twelve children, only two of whom survive: Mrs. Angeline Bruce, of Hogan township, who was born on April 3, 1824; and Nelson T. Baker, now residing in Illinois, who was born on March 24, 1827."

WILL (Dearborn Co., Indiana Will Bk 3, pp 135-137)

"I, Thomas Baker do make and publish this my last will and testament.

"First, after my demise, I desire that my remains be buried in a manner becoming my circumstances. After paying my debts from my effects, I desire and direct that my beloved wife, Rachel, remain in and have possession of all my estate both real and personal, to have absolute control and ownership of the same as long as she remains my widow.

"I desire that my said wife keep my three youngest children together on the farm at home with her and have active control of them till they become of age. After the death of my said wife I desire that such of my earthy effects as may then be remaining be disposed of in the following manner that all the land to be sold and my daughter, Josephine be paid out of the proceeds thereof one hundred and fifty dollars, and that each of my other daughters be paid one hundred dollars out of the said proceeds. The residue of my effects after paying my daughters as above stated, I wish divided equally between my sons that may then be living, excepting Nelson and John off of each whose shares, I direct that two hundred dollars be taken and added to my other sons shares and I further desire and direct that forty dollars be deducted from the share of my son, William and added to the other shares of the other sons excepting Nelson and John.

"I wish my said wife to have the entire control and management of all the affairs of the farm during her life-time, or widowhood, to sell each property as may be necessary for the sustenance of the family and education of the children.

"And I hereby constitute and appoint Elias Chisman executor of this my last will and testament, and desire that he may faithfully execute the same as herein provided."

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of July A.D. 1853, Thomas Baker (his mark).
