John Babbs was born in Virginia 8/11/1756, died 2/13,1844 at the home of his daughter Hannah Glass in Ripley Co. Indiana. He is buried in Booher Graveyard, Napeleon, Ind.

He enlisted in the summer of 1776 at Annapolis, Md for a year period and was a private in Col.Smallwoods Regt., Maryland line. He re-enlisted for the ward duration. He was in the battle on Long Island,under Capt.Adrew Scott and with the remnants of the regiment still surviving,fought in the battle of White Plains, N. Y. where Scott was killed.

John suffered a broken leg being struck by a chunk of rock torn loose by a cannonball. He was hospitalized at Morristown, N. J. but when the leg healed was judged unfit for active service, thereafter he served as orderly sergeant and hospital attendant. Appearing at Bethlehem, Valley Forge,and Boss Keys in Pa. At Fishkill, N. J.and at Middlebrook, N. J. At the close of the war he marched to Annapolis, Md. His discharge was signed by by Lt. Burges and Major Price of Md.
