Son of Robert and Fidelia Umbarger Mitchell, born in Clark Co. IL. During the Civil War he enlisted in Company C, 62 Illinois Infantry for 3 years. He reenlisted under General Order No. 161 as a Veteran volunteer and served until March 6, 1866 he was discharged at Little Rock, AK.
He returned to Clark county where on July 28, 1870 he married Sarah McDaniel. They had 4 children, Robert, Maggie, William and Logan.
