Enlisted August 15, 1861, mustered in September 27, 1861, as Private with Co. H. 11th Illinois Infantry. Promoted to corporal, promoted to sergeant, promoted to 1st sergeant, commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on August 14, 1864. Promoted to captain July 13, 1865, but never mustered as captain; mustered out on July 14, 1865, at Baton Rouge, LA. as a 2nd lieutenant.
