BELLE PLAINE

Jean Newland Swailes, 67, died Thursday in Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines, after a long illness. Memorial services: 2:30 p.m. Sunday, First Congregational Church. There will be no visitation. Russell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, Harold; three sons, John of Russellville, Ark., Don of Oregon, Wis., and Thomas of Platteville, Wis.; and a brother, Don Newland of Des Moines.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Michael, Bonnie, Amy, Mary, Patrick, Molly and Amanda; three daughters-in-law, Janine, Peggy and Nancy; and a sister-in-law, Ann.

She was born March 17, 1924, in Belle Plaine, to Edith Hamlin and Dr. Don H. Newland. She married Harold Swailes there on Sept. 7, 1947, in First Congregational Church. She was a homemaker, bookkeeper and tax specialist with the law practice of her husband, Judge Harold Swailes, in Belle Plaine for many years.

Jean graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1942. She was a Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board honor society member at the Univesity of Iowa, where she earned a master's degree in romance languages. She taught Spanish at the U of I from 1946-49.

In addition to being a longtime member of First Congregational Church, Jean was a member of PEO and the library, all in Belle Plaine, and the Regional Library boards.
