Kea married James Martens on Aug. 6, 1960, before moving to St. Joseph in 1961. He survives of the home.
She was a graduate of Morningside College, Sioux City, IA, where she earned her degree in elementary education. Kea was a teacher from the heart. Her early teaching years were spent in Iowa; and she began her teaching career with the St. Joseph School District at Humboldt, Pershing and Lake Contrary as an aide, and then moved to Webster Elementary School, where she made many dear friends, was touched by and touched many lives.
After retiring, she continued as a volunteer and teaching summer school at Webster. Unable to walk away from teaching, she was working as an aide at St. Paul Lutheran Pre-School when she became ill in December of 2007.
Baking for family and friends, and trying new recipes was the hobby of her life. She also enjoyed attending craft shows and doing crafts, shopping, watching sports on TV and most of all attending activities for her grandson; whether it was for school, band, sports, Scouts or just hanging out in the driveway shooting hoops or playing catch.
Kea was truly loved by her family and will be missed dearly.
Additional survivors include two daughters, Cathy Martens of St. Joseph; and LeAnn Francis, and husband, Dennis of Liberty, MO; brother, Jerry Heesch, and wife, Janet, Fort Dodge, IA; the apple of her eye, grandson, Ethan; and nieces and nephews and their families that she loved spending time with and always volunteered to bring the baked goods.
Service is Monday at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, St. Joseph. Interment at Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. The family will receive friends Sunday at the funeral home.
