Mary Pengelly was the leader of the local Women's Christian Temperance Union, a crusader for women's right, and a social reformer. In 1901, she was the first woman to vote in a local election. She married Richard Pengelly on January 14, 1847 in Paw Paw, MI. He was a Methodist minister who later became a physician and ironically created a "woman's medicine," Zoa-Phora, containing mostly alcohol.

Mary (House) Pengelly is my gggrandfather's sister. Her father, my ggggrandfather was the Rev. Elisha House, Sr.
