Roby, oldest son of Lester and Lena Grubb, served in the Army Air Corps during World War Two and later became an attorney, serving as Senior Vice President of the Burton Rubber Company of Burton, Ohio for 19 years.

He married Mary Seibert of Akron in 1950 and they raised their twin sons Michael and Frederick (Fritz) and daughter Maribeth in Chardon, Ohio. According to Fritz, "Roby believed foremost in honesty and integrity and had the ability to see the good in people and make it work for their benefit."

Roby graduated from the University of Akron while also working part-time at a variety of jobs. He subsequently received his law degree from the Western Reserve School of Law under the GI Bill. Roby practiced law for awhile, but found his true career in the rubber industry. He became a member of the American Bar Association and the American Chemical Society. He was also interested in family history.

During his extended final illness, Roby re-examined his spirituality with the help of his son Michael's father-in-law, a deacon. In a moving ceremony, he was baptized and received Holy Communion for the first time, and ultimately received the last rites of the Catholic Church.
