E. Northcraft, Pioneer Texas Architect,

Is Dead

San Marcos, Texas, November 20. In the death of Edward Northcraft at his home in this city Sunday evening, one of the oldest citizens in this section passed away. Born in Fulton, Indiana October 18, 1833 and married to Miss Eliza Donalson at Canton, Missouri in 1863 and coming to San Marcos after the close of the Civil War, he had made his home here ever since.

Mr. Northcraft was one of the pioneer architects of the State and such buildings as the San Houston Normal at Huntsville, the Southwest Texas Normal at San Marcos, the State Reformatory at Gatesville and many courthouses over the State are monuments to his abilities. Recognizing his qualifications he was frequently called in consultation by Governor Ross in regard to the constructional work on the present State Capitol.

Mr. Northcraft expressed his kindliness in actions, not in words, and the gathering of friends at the simple funeral services held at the home on Monday afternoon by Dr. Grafton was ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Lucy Burleson of San Antonio, Mrs. Charles W. Lunsford of San Marcos, Mrs. R.C. Warn of Pecos and the following grandchildren: Mrs. Leroy W. Morris of San Antonio, Mrs. Jay Heald of El Paso and Edward and Francis Warn of Pecos.
