Sr. RUTH MAXINE SPEH, S.S.N.D.
Sister Ruth (formerly Mary Edward Paul) Speh, a former teacher and administrator, died Thursday (Sept. 22, 2005) of congestive heart failure at DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton. She was 78.

Sister Speh was reared in St. Louis. She entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1946 and professed her final vows in 1955. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Loyola University in New Orleans in 1956. Sister Speh earned two master's degrees from St. Louis University, the first in chemistry in 1963 and the second in Scripture in 1980.

Sister Speh taught elementary and high school students for 18 years at schools in St. Louis, New Orleans, Baton Rouge, La., and San Antonio.

She taught at Our Lady of Sorrows School from 1949 to 1950 and at the former St. Alphonsus High School from 1957 to 1962.

Sister Speh was assistant principal for five years at Vandebilt Catholic High School in Houma, La., from 1965 to 1970.

From 1972 to 1984, Sister Speh served as pastoral minister and director of religious education for the Tohono O'odham Indians in Sells, Ariz. She then became a director at the Christian Service Center in Abbeville, La., until 1991.

Sister Speh returned to St. Louis and served as director of Liturgical Fabric Arts for four years at the St. Louis Province motherhouse. From 1995 to 2004, Sister Speh served as a part-time staff member. During this time, she initiated a tutoring program at St. Vincent's Learning Center in St. Louis. She retired in April to Veronica House-The Sarah Community in Bridgeton.

Visitation, beginning with a prayer service, will be from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Veronica House-The Sarah Community on the campus of DePaul Health Center, 12349 DePaul Drive in Bridgeton. A second visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the School Sisters of Notre Dame's motherhouse chapel, 320 East Ripa Avenue in Lemay, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the chapel. Burial will be at the motherhouse cemetery.

Among the survivors are her two sisters, Sister Leonida Speh of Bridgeton and Frances Lee of Arcadia, Mo.
