John came with his parents to Rankin County as a child and remained until his death in 1933. He was a member of the Dry Creek Baptist Church and was buried in its cemetery. He married twice, first to Sara Jane Holbrooks in 1871, daughter of Henry and Phernity Brown Holbrooks. Sara died at the age of 27, leaving four small children, the youngest being under 2 years old. John lived first in the Myers Coummunity where his father, Carmen, gave him a tract of land, a sum of money and a house that was erected by Carmen's slaves. Just as Carmen had done for his other son Jim. This home stood west of the old Enos Corley home place. It stood for many years after John moved to the Shady Dell Community, where he lived after his marriage 15 Jun 1880 to Alice Stevens, a great granddaughter of the Rve. Cader Price, a noted Baptist preacher of the day.
