The second son of George Moritz Hoelzel and Anna Margaret "Ann" Harbberts, "Bud" served in the United States Navy at Okinawa during World War II.

Like his father, Bud was a career railroad man. He was a fireman early in his career with the Chicago and North Western. He was later an engineer for many years until his retirement.

He married Elsie (nee Johnson) Wagner on 27 Sep 2002 at the Congregational Church in South Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois.

At the time of his death due to heart disease, Bud was 80 years and 22 days old. He was buried on 17 Mar 2005 and was survived by his wife, Elsie, who passed away in 2011.

In addition to his wife, Bud was also survived by his brother, Gavin, and sister-in-law; 3 nieces; and several cousins.
