Elizabeth was the daughter of Isaac and Cynthia (Carpenter) Haptonstall. On April 14, 1852 she married William M Munday in White Sulpher Springs, Virginia. Together they had three children, Donzella, Emeline, and Oscar. William died on June 1, 1859.

On September 12, 1863 she married Dennison George Potter in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia. He is buried at the "Means" cemetery in Greenwood County.
