Alice M. Stevens was born in March 1883, in Indiana to Joseph A. and Martha Alice Life Stevens. There were six siblings who lived to be adults and several that did not for a total of eleven children in the family. Those who reached adulthood were, William H., Jonas Franklin, Mary Elsie (Dill), John O., Helen (Bowman), and Irene (Hoerger).

Alice married William Harry Cox on 25 December 1900 in Parke County, Indiana. There were no children born of their union. Their neice Doris Dill lived with them, and is listed as a foster daughter in Alice's obituary.

Alice married Fred Shalley before 1912, probably in Parke County, Indiana. Her husband survived her at their home in Indianapolis.

She was a member of the Montezuma Presbyterian Church, Royal Neighbors of American and Riverside Temple of Pythian Sisters No. 370 in Indianapolis.

Two sister, Mrs. Helen Bowman and Mrs. Irene Hoerger and two brothers, John Stevens of Indianapolis and Frank Stevens of West Lebanon and a granddaughter (probably Doris Dill Batkin's daughter) survived the deceased.

Alice M. Stevens Cox Shalley died on 12 November 1949 at her home in Indianapolis where she had suffered from an illness of more than two months.
