He married Freda Kathryn Schuhmacher. They had six children, four girls and two boys.
They farmed with his the Adam and Lena Schuhmacher in Hartford City, Licking Township, Blackford then moved to Lakeland, Polk County, Florida, bought Holstein-Freisian, and set up three Pine Valley Dairy farms. They entire three generations of the family ran the dairy and then future generations cotinued the tradition after Robert died.
He shared the burial plot with his father- and mother-in-law just like they farmed together in life and later with his wife Freda.
