Alma was born in the Winnetonka section of North Kansas City, MO. She lost her father when she was 4 years old. Alma and her mother then lived with Clyde and Sally Balkey, her sister and brother-in-law.

The family story is that Sally was hospitalized and Gerald Floyd Burns' stepmother shared a hospital room with Sally. When Alma visited her sister, she met the Burns stepmother. Floyd's stepmother liked Alma and arranged a blind date between Alma and Floyd. Floyd was in the service at the time, but when he came home on leave, they had their blind date.

Alma married Gerald Floyd Burns on 17 April 1943 in Corsicana, Navarro Co., TX. They had one child, Timothy Cloyce Burns.

She worked in a Kansas City law firm.

Alma died in a nursing home in Waverly.
