The funeral of Mrs. Elsie Hugo, who died Sunday night, at the family residence, 728 Main avenue, following an illness of almost fifteen years took place this morning from the family residence at 10 o'clock. Interment was made in city cemetery No. 2.
Mrs. Hugo was a pioneer woman of San Antonio and Southwest Texas. She was the widow of the late Charles Hugo, for years a prominent banker and business man of San Antonio. She was married to Mr. Hugo in 1869, and their silver jubilee was observed about seventeen years ago. Before her marriage she was Miss Elsie Haseloff, a native of Berlin, Prussia. She was born April 18, 1848 and when about a year old came with her parents to the United States and settle in Comal county, near New Braunfels. When her parents died early in her girlhood, she was brought to San Antonio by relatives. Her education was obtained chiefly at the old German-English school on South Alamo street.
Mr. Hugo died five years ago, and three of his children, Mrs. Charles Chabot, Miss Alfrida and Victor Hugo have preceded Mrs. Hugo to the grave. Surviving are four children: Mrs. W. D. McCarthy, Mrs. A. C. Shell, Ralph Hugo, president of the Hugo-Schmeltzer company, and Miss Lola F. Hugo, besides several grandchildren, and a brother, G. F. Haseloff of Dallas.
Rev. Arthur Jones conducted the funeral services and the pallbearers were: Active: D. Allenson, F. Wild, August Herff, Edward Fomby, Louis Stumberg and Herman Schuhard. Honorary: George Heuermann, Ernest Steves, E. R. Guenther, August Schmeltzer, William Aubrey, Dr. J. Braunnagel, G. A. Duerler, C. F. Kleins and George C. Vaughn.
