Edward A. Jack, aged 58 years, of Springfield, recently decided to kill himself because of ill health. Last Sunday, having access to the Edmands hardware store where he had been employed as a janitor, he secured a revolver and a box of cartridges. Then he waited until early yesterday morning when he was supposed to begin work in a new position as janitor at the Roosa flats. Instead of going to the flats, he went out on the porch at the rear of his home, sat in a chair and smoked his pipe. He waited for the approach of a train to drown out the sound of his revolver. As the train rumbled by, he placed the gun against his right temple and pulled the trigger.
Serveral hours afterward, his wife Theresa went out on the porch and discovered the lifeless body of her husband. Beside it lay his pipe. Not far away was the gun. The police were called and the coroner began an investigation. The coroner's jury returned a verdict that Jack had committed suicide while temporarily deranged.
A note found by the coroner stated that he was going to kill himself on account of bad health. In the note he bade good-by to his wife.
The funeral will be Wednesday morning at the residence. Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery.
