Mrs. Marie Davis Harris was born on October 5, 1914, in Bedford County, the second of four children of Dr. Stanley White and Lillie Buchanan Davis.

She attended school through the ninth grade at Turner College in Shelbyville, then attended McAdams High School before earning her high school diploma at A & I State College - now Tennessee State University in Nashville. Following her freshman year in college, she returned home due to the serious illness of her father. She secured a job teaching and working toward her own education during the summer, eventually earning her bachelor's degree in 1946. She did her post-graduate work in elementary education at the University of Cincinnati.

Mrs. Harris began her teaching career in Bell Buckle, later transferred to McAdams (renamed Bedford County Training School). She married Sidney Wood Harris on December 25, 1935, the principal of Bedford County Training School and a respected educator. Mrs. Harris retired from teaching at Madison Street School after a career of 42 years in the local school system.

She joined the Baptist Church at the age of eleven and was an active member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Shelbyville. Among her many church activities, she served as Sunday School teacher, pianist, and church clerk.

Mrs. Harris was active in the Bedford County retired Teachers Association and the Tennessee Retired Teachers Association, was president of the Bedford County Family and Community Education Club County Council, a member and president of Hearth and Home FCE, and was a member and president of Church Women United. She was also a member of the hospital's Pink Ladies Auxiliary, a member of Bedford County Democratic Club and Democratic Women and Yes We Care, the local affiliate to the Drug Free Tennessee Program.

She joined the Senior Citizens Center in 1980 and was elected to the board of directors in 1986, serving as secretary to the board since 1990. She was also a member of South Central Aging Advisory Council, serving as secretary since 1992.

Mrs. Harris is predeceased by her parents, Dr. Stanley White and Lillie Buchanan Davis; two brothers, Stanley Jr. and William Key Davis. She is survived by one sister, Harriette (Gilbert) Pleasant of Nashville, Tennessee; a niece, Annie"Marie (Willie)Steele of Montgomery, Alabama; three grand-nieces; one grand nephew; and two great-grand nieces.
