Funeral services for Gladys Browning Dowd, 87, of Saint Jo, Texas were held Wednesday, January 10, 2001 at the Church of Christ at Saint Jo, Texas. Ministers C. E. Cole and Chester Cullum officiated at the 2:00 P.M. funeral. Burial followed in Illinois Bend Cemetery in Montague County, with arrange-ments under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Saint Jo, Texas. Gladys died Monday, January 8, 2001 at the Nocona General Hospital in Nocona, Texas, at 7:15 A.M. She was born August 21, 1913 in Montague County, Texas, the daughter of W. H. Browning and Fannie Whaley Browning. She married Maxey Dowd on March 25, 1938 in Nocona, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband on September 3, 1979, her parents, W. H. and Fannie (Whaley) Browning; 2 sisters, Vera Dodgin and Ethel Pinckert; and 1 brother, Henry Browning. Gladys was a nurse and member of the Saint Jo Church of Christ. She lived in the Saint Jo area most of her life. She worked as an L.V.N. in the Hereford and Nocona Hospitals and at local nursing homes. She was, along with her husband, Maxey, a farmer/rancher, continuing this after his death. She loved her family and really enjoyed gardening and cooking and she loved reading. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Judy Dowd of Saint Jo; and one granddaughter, Johnna Jean Dowd, also of Saint Jo; a sister, Lorene Ivins of Tullahoma, TN; and a brother, W. H. Browning of Clarendon, Texas. Pallbearers were Doug Gaston, David Gaston, Wendell Thompson, Craig McCrary, Bill Dowd, and Gary Brewer.
