Son of Josiah Carlock Shinn and Elizabeth Frances Gilpin.

Married on Jan 7 1875 to Mildred Carlton "Minnie" Williams. He was the father of Grace Electra Shinn (b 10/9/1875) and Joseph Roy Longworth Shinn (b 3/18/1880).

He was a teacher, journalist and lecturer, eventually moving his family to Washington DC to take a post with the United States Department of the Interior in the Indian Office.

He was originally interred in Oakland Cemetery in Russellville, but when his wife Minnie became ill herself, she had his remains reinterred in Roselawn, where she was also laid to rest.
