From the Spartanburgt Hearld 8/17/1910 forwarded to me by another researcher:

ALEXANDER, WILLIAM S. – Born 1840 at Shelby, N.C. Enlisted March 1861, Pacolet
Guards, 5th Reg., S.C.V., after first year transferred to Palmetto
Sharpshooters, Capt. JAKE CARPENTER LIMEHOUSE. Was promoted to orderly
sergeant, and then to lieutenant. Was lieutenant at close of war. Wounded at
the battle of Spottsylvania, struck on the neck with a piece of shell. Brick
mason and plasterer. "At second battle of Manassas struck on hip with a Minnie
ball, lodged in haversack. If my grub sack had been full I would hardly have
known that I was hit. The old soldiers will certainly appreciate the interest
you are taking in their behalf."
