John Albert Mercer II was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Army after his graduation from Texas A&M University, and lost his life fighting for his country in the Korean conflict on August 8, 1950. He was originally buried in Halletsville, TX, but now in Fort Sam. First Lieutenant Mercer was killed in action near Chindong-ni, South Korea. He served with Battery B, 555th Field Artillery Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Korean War Service Medal.
