William was the fifth of seven children born to Maine Senator William and Marietta (Forbes) Plaisted. William worked as a logger in northwestern California and in 1900 William bought the Brooking Hotel in Smith River. He and his first wife Susan had six children: William, Maggie, James, Raymond, Harrison, and Freedom.
