bituary Phillips County Review, Phillips Co Kansas
"Sunset, like a holy benediction after strife,
Has fallen upon a long, strong, honest life;
the toll-worn hands are laid to rest.
Across his faithful tired breast;
His work is done, his cares laid by,
How sweet to rest 'neath friendly sky,
Nor dread the waking: Knowing we
That he who ordered all his life, Protection gave when fears were rife, And sustenance for those he loved, Would welcome him to realms above with outstretched hand, and words of love."
James Ayers was born March 13, 1847 in Jackson County Indiana and grew to manhood in that locality, He was the last of a family of 14 children, and would have rounded out full 88 years had he lived 3 more days, he having passed away at his home in Kirwin, Kansas where he had lived the past 28 years, on Sat March 9, 1935.
On Nov 11, 1875 he married Amanda Jane Logsdon at Freetown, Indiana, and they joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1880. In 1882 he moved his family to a homestead near Orleans, Neb. where they lived until 1898, when they moved to Graham County, Kansas and in 1907 came to Kirwin where they have since resided. Mr and Mrs Ayers have raised a family of 8 children.
In the year 1925, Mr and Mrs Ayers celebrated their golden wedding in a very happy manner, with their children and grandchildren around them, and this year of 1935 they would have celebrated their 60th anniversary.
Mr Ayers was, in his prime and exceptionally strong and stalwart man; never called the doctor but twice until his last illness. He had been failing in health for several months but pneumonia set in about a week ago and neither medical skill, nor expert nursing availed.
Of James Ayers family who survive him are Ora F Ayers of Stanton Iowa, Zella M Spicer of Glade, Kansas, Earl G Ayers Weldona, Colorado, Ethel Garrett Kirwin, Kansas, Mary Dawson, Omaha, Nebraska; Arva Royce and Fern Rassmussen of Kirwin, Kansas. One daughter Inez preceded him August 10, 1896 and is buried in the family lot in Orleans, Nebraska, where her father's remains will shortly be laid to rest.
"Companion, Father, Neighbor, Friend,
Farwell, We know 'tis not the end. 'Tis the BEGINING , of a freer breath, Whose somber portals we call Death"
The services were held at the Congregational church here in Kirwin at one o'clock Monday March 11. Rev G.C. Milner had charge of the service at the church assisted by Rev O.N. Wiles. Rev Wiles had charge of the services at the grave at Orleans, Nebraska.
