Martha Nettles, 73, of San Mateo, died Monday, July 1, 2002 at Putnam Community Medical Center.
She was born in Wauchula. She grew up in Bartow. Coming from Newberry, she had been a resident of Putnam County for the past 37 years, first living in East Palatka and later in San Mateo. She was medically retiree from Central States Diversified in Palatka in 1976 after eleven years of service. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of San Mateo, where she served as a kitchen hostess and in the Bible school. She was a founding member of the former Bass Capital C. B. Club in Palatka, where her handle was "Pepper." She enjoyed bowling and fishing, flower gardening and was an avid Gator fan.
She was preceded in death by one son, Willard E. "Corky" Nettles, Jr.; her parents, Burl and Lillie Mae Burkett; 2 sisters, Ruby Reilly and Sug Waters; 2 sons-in-law, Donzell McCullough and Bob Gill.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Willard E. Nettles, Sr. of San Mateo; 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara McCullough Edwards and husband Neil of Hollister, Sarah "Sally" Gill of Palatka and Sheila and Robert Thames of Palatka; 2 sisters Betty Tindall of Springville, Utah and Glenda Sellers of Bartow; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at First Baptist Church of San Mateo with Rev. Leroy Lewis and Rev. Howard "Buck" Long officiating. A video will be shown. Interment will follow at San Mateo Cemetery.
