Funeral services for Marlus J. Brandt, of Decorah, IA, and formerly of Castalia, IA were held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, IA with Rev. David Lenth officiating. Organist was Lorraine Meyer, pianist was Christy Brandt, and violinist was Rebekah Brandt. Songs were: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "My Faith Looks Up to Thee", and "Who is This Host Arrayed in White?". Special music was Marlys Hager with Rev. David Lenth and Sarah Lenth on "Were You There?"

Pallbearers were Shira (Brandt) Gebel, Brian Brandt, Ben Brandt, Andrew Brandt, Matthew Brandt, and Megan Brandt. Honorary pallbearers were: Keith and Chris Bodensteiner, Wayne and Betty Timmerman, Eugene and Jean Szabo, Vernon and Kay Spilde, Sam and Doris Saboe, Bob and Irene Klisart, Einar and Jennie Borness, and Gerald and Marlys Hager. Internment was in Pleasant View Cemetery in Castalia, IA. Schluter-Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA handled the arrangements.

Marlus, 79, died Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA, following a long illness.

Marlus Jean Brandt was born March 1, 1929 near Monona, IA, the daughter of Edwin and Anna (Stee) Engelhardt. Marlus was baptized and confirmed at the Ossian Lutheran Church. She attended country school south of Castalia for one year, Castalia public schools and graduated from Postville High School in 1947.

On January 25, 1948 she married Robert Brandt at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia. Together they farmed near Castalia for 47 years. After retiring they moved to Ossian, residing there for five years. For the past five years they lived at Vennehjem in Decorah.

Marlus worked as a secretary in the Placement Office at Luther College from 1968-78 and in later years part-time at the Luther Bookstore. While there, she became a second mother and grandmother to many students. She also served as secretary for all of the Hmong families that had moved into Decorah in the late 70's.

Marlus was a wonderful cook and grandmother, often having the grandchildren taking turns staying with them throughout the summer. Marlus was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia, IA, where she was a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, Bible School teacher, and a member of WELCA for over 50 years. In recent years, Marlus and Robert made over 200 lap quilts that were given to family, friends, and various organizations.

She is survived by her husband of sixty years: Robert Brandt of Decorah, IA; three sons: Stan (Linda) Brandt of Ridgeway, IA, Brad (Janet) Brandt of Rochester, MN, and Rich (Kristi) Brandt of Sioux Falls, SD; six grandchildren: Shira (Patrick) Gebel, Brian (Christy) Brandt, Ben (Christy) Brandt, Andrew (Lisa) Brandt, Matthew Brandt and Megan Brandt; 10 great-grandchildren: Brandt, Elliott and Sadie Gebel, Gregory, Thomas and Charlie Brandt, Rebekah and Noah Brandt, Lincoln and Owen Brandt; two sisters: Arlene (Leon) Everman of Castalia, IA and JoAnn O'Hara of Decorah, IA; two brothers: Ed (Nancy) Engelhardt of Luana, IA and Roger (Carol) Engelhardt of Clermont, IA; one brother-in-law: Lloyd (Hilda) Brandt of Casa Grande, AZ; and several nieces and nephews.

Marlus was preceded in death by her parents: Edwin and Anna (Stee) Engelhardt; one brother-in-law: Leo O'Hara; two nephews: Scott O'Hara and Bruce Everman.
