Ralph Herbert Spencer Obituary

Ralph Herbert Spencer, 89, American Fork, died Aug 2, 1985 at his home of cancer.
He was born July 25, 1918 at American Fork to Marshall Henry and Agnes Matilda Hansen Spencer. He married Betty Jean Gaisford Hansen Doc 9, 1949 at American Fork. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He attended American Fork schools, graduating from American Fork High School, where he was honored as Stale Future Farmer. He was a partner in Spencer Brothers Farm and was also employed for 28 years at US Steel, Geneva Works, retiring from the blast furnace division in 1979. He was an active member of the American Fork 1st Ward, having served as a stake missionary in the Alpine Stake, as well as filling many callings in priesthood and auxiliary organizations. He held the office of High Priest at the time of his death.

He served as Scout Master for more than 10 years in addition to numerous years on troop district and council committees. His Scouting service was recognized by presentation of the Silver Beaver. He was a longtime member of the American Fork Civic Chorus and the American Fork and 1st Ward choirs.

He served as a member of the US Air Force for almost four years during World War II and was stationed both in the south and overseas on Guam. He held the rank of stall sergeant and he was a cook for the officer's mess.

He was honored by KSL Radio Last December with "A Good Neighbor Award" for sharing the harvest of his garden with family and friends.

He served three terms as a member of the Americain Fork Beautification Committee, assisting with community beautification projects and area cleanup activities.
He was a longtime member of the United steelworkers of America, local 2701.
Survivors include his wife of American Fork, three sons and one daughter: Dr. Larry J. Hansen. Durham, New Hampshire; Brent Guy Spencer, Midway; Alan Charles Spencer, Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Lynn M. (Marsha) Mellor, Lehi. 10 grandchildren, and one brother and one sister: Arden H. Spencer and Mrs. John F (Ina) Abel, both American Fork.

Services will be at the American Fork First Ward Chapel, 381 S 300 E. Monday at 11 a.m. Friends may call at Anderson and Sons Mortuary. 49 E. 100 N. American Fork. 7-9 p.m. today and at the church one hour prior to services Monday.

Burial will be in American Fork City Cemetery with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars District 4.
