Robert "Bob" Descourouez, 80, of Burlington, passed away Friday, September 26, 2008, at his home, following a brief struggle with cancer.

Robert Joseph Descourouez was born November 9, 1927 in Geneva the eldest son of John J. and Helen (Heisten) Descourouez.

His early years were spent in St. Charles, and from 1935 to 1941 the family lived in Chicago where he attended St. Phillip Neri Grade School. When the family returned to St. Charles, Bob enrolled in Marmion Military Academy in Aurora, graduating in 1945.

He worked at the Chronicle Publishing Company prior to joining the Army in February of 1946. He served with the occupation forces in Japan, and was discharged on July 4, 1947.

On May 14, 1949 he married Lorraine Rockman at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in St. Charles. They had three daughters, Jean, Carol, and Patricia before Lorraine's untimely death in 1953. Returning to his parents home, his mother helped raise his girls.

Bob married Diane Burm Descourouez, his brother's widow, on September 9, 1983 at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Hampshire.

Bob had a lifelong interest in birds which included over 30 years of breeding and racing homing pigeons.

Following his retirement from the Moline Malleable Iron Co. in St. Charles in 1986, he spent his days raising rabbits, gardening, and taking care of the grounds of the home he and Diane shared in Burlington. Brought together by their love of dancing, many Saturday nights found Diane and Bob enjoying their favorite pastime, often at the Moose Hall in St. Charles.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; his daughters, Joan (Allan) Metzger and Patricia (Lupe) Galvan, both of DeKalb, and Carol (Mike) Fairhead of Indianapolis; and step-sons, Mike (Suzanne) Descourouez of Willow Springs, NC and Louis (Lisa) Descourouez of Union; his sister, Sister Mary Ellen Descourouez O.L.V.M. of Chicago; 12 grandchildren; and nieces, Rev. Edwina (Sam) Baethge of San Marcos, TX and Judi Rockman of Austin, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lorraine; his brother, William "Bill"; and step-son, Phillip.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, September 30, at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 297 East Jefferson Street, Hampshire with Fr. Joseph Nicolosi and Mnsgr. Thomas Dempsey officiating.
