William Darby Osborn was born in Scotch Plains, NJ July 19, 1810 to John (#63884481) and Sarah Cole Osborn. Around 1833, William emigrated westward with his parents, sisters, uncle, aunt, cousins and other neighbors. They traveled by land, then later on rafts to reach the Cinncinati, OH area. Some of the party settled there, others moved on a little further west to Indiana. The Osborn's settled in Dearborn County, IN, although, over time, they spread to counties further west, mostly along what is now Interstate 74.

William married soon after arriving in Ohio to a local girl, Harriet McCash (#23810947) on July 17, 1834. Harriet was seven years his junior and her parents had settled in the area by 1810. William worked as a wagon maker most of his life, a trade he learned from his father.

William and Harriet had five children, the youngest three survived to adulthood: Mary Caroline, Isaac, Sarah Elizabeth (#36978847), Clara (#23812898), and David Louis (#45127724). The couple separated and divorced by 1856 when their youngest child was barely six. William never remarried, he lived off and on with his daughter Sarah and her husband Benjamin Franklin Roseboom (#36978816) and sometimes he lived in a rented room or on the premises of the wood shop where he worked. He referred to himself as a widower, although his wife did not die until 1885. At the end of his life, William was living with his sister Maria near New Point, IN. William is buried in the Old Rossburg Cemetery and shares a headstone with his sister Maria McCammon.

Willaim's grandfather, John Baldwin Osborn (#43615692), was an American Revolution veteran and his son, David Louis Osborn (#45127724), was a Civil War veteran.
