Varina Jefferson Davis Bell was born on August 14, 1867, in North Carolina, to her father, Rufus Wilkinson Jenkins, who was 45 years old & her mother, Abigail F Pigott Bell, who was 38 years old.

When Varina was 25 years old, she married Dennis "Deems" Willeford Jenkins in Newport NC on October 19, 1892. (He was the son of Reverend John Wesley Jenkins). They had two children during their marriage: A daughter named Lucy Bell Jenkins (1893-1934) and a son named John Le Bon Jenkins (1895-1947).

In 1900, Varina was living in Atlanta Georgia. Varina Jefferson Davis Bell Jenkins passed away on March 24, 1906 in Atlanta at the age of 38. Her children were 13 & 11 years old. Her remains were returned to her hometown and she was buried here at Harlow United Methodist Church Graveyard in Harlowe NC beside her parents.

After Varina passed away in 1906, her widowed husband remarried in 1910 to Clara Kettle Jenkins and they lived in Charlotte where he worked for Norfolk Southern. He passed away and was buried there in Elmwood/Pinewood Cemetery.

Thier daughter Lucy Bell Jenkins Powell passed away in 1935 in Charlotte NC at the age of 42. (unable to legibly ready cause of death).

Their son John Le Bon Jenkins fought in both world wars. He was killed in an auto accident in 1947 at age 50 in Charlotte NC

Her Grave Inscription is part of poem titled "Gone" written by John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892) in 1845 and published in Volume IV. (of VII) of his Personal Poems .

" Fold her oh Father in thine arms
and let her henceforth be
A messenger of love between
Our human hearts and thee"

John Greenleaf Whittier was know as "Freedom's Poet". He was an was an American Quaker poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery. He is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings.

*Her father, Rufus Wilkinson Bell, and his sister-in-law (Verena's aunt (mother's sister)-Emeline Jamison Pigott) had both been arrested as Confederate spies during the Civil War.

Varina Jefferson Davis Bell (Jenkins) was named in honor of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his wife Varina.
