Bankhead was born in Franklin [County], Texas, March 20, 1910, the son of Jesse E. and Annie Vinilla Redfern Bankhead. He was retired from United Gas as a supervisor after 30 years of service. A Church of Christ minister for 51 years, he was a member of the ByField Church of Christ where he was an adult Sunday School teacher.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 22, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Hawthorn Funeral Home, with Rev. James Stringer and Rev. James Moffett officiating. Interment followed in Restland Memorial Park.
The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday afternoon from 4 until 9 p.m.
Bankhead is survived by his wife, Dovie Bankhead of Longbranch; a son, Jesse A. "Buddy" Bankhead of Henderson; two stepsons, James Moffett of Memphis, Tenn., and Milton Tucker of Henderson; a daughter, Tommie D. Sloan of Fort Worth; a sister, Geraldine Waldrup of Big Sandy; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
