William Henry (went by Henry) Hanawalt was the second of nine known children of George Laman Hanawalt (1760-1826) and Susannah Rothrock Hanawalt (1773-1854), who married 1793 at Mifflin County, Pennsylvania.
Henry married Mary Rothrock (1801-1885) in about 1821 at presumably Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He first visited Indiana in 1833, and again in 1838, when he entered 240 acres of land. In the fall of 1846 he, his wife, and six children moved permanently to a farm north of Burnettsville.
Henry and Mary were the parents of ten known children, namely:

2. Susannah Hanawalt Grassmyer (1826-1876)
3. George Hanawalt (???-young?)
4. Abraham Hanawalt (1829-1909)
