Prominent Shepherdstown attorney for almost half a century. From the distinguished Lee family of Virginia. He was the nephew of "Light Horse Harry" Lee and a cousin of General Robert E. Lee, CSA. He was the son of Edmund Jennings Lee & Sara Lee. Married Eliza Shepherd, the daughter of Captain Abraham Shepherd and Eleanor Strode Shepherd on October 10,1823. Lived in Wheeling for four years. There daughter, Ellen was born in 1824, and son Charles Shepherd Lee in 1826. The Lee's returned to Shepherdstown, Va in 1827. On September 27,1831, Lee acquired the ten acres where he later built his "Leeland" house. A local Cholera epidemic which started with C&O Canal workers in 1833, claimed Eliza Shepherd Lee, Lee's wife. Also children, Edmund J, age 5; Eliza at age 3; James D at eight months. In 1834, Lee married Henrietta Bedinger of "Bedford". Three sons and two daughters were born at the original "Leeland" which burned on April 12, 1856. One son Edwin Gray Lee became a Confederate general, who later practiced law and wrote poetry, died young in 1870; Lee bought the "Bedford" estate from his brother in law Henry Bedinger. There the Lee's lived until July 19, 1864 when it was burned by Yankee troops. Then the new "Leeland" was built of brick with a separate law office for Lee.
