Lovey was the daughter of Thomas Cooper and Taphenus White. Her siblings were Risdon, Betsy, John, Thomas, Margaret and Samuel H. The Cooper family moved to North Carolina in 1794 after the death of Thomas Cooper, Sr who died in 1789 in Caroline County, Maryland.

She married William M. Douthit, Jr, son of William M. Douthit and Sarah Job, on January 29, 1797 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Their children were Thomas Jefferson, James J., Jincy, Frances, Pauline A., Sarah H., William Gilbreath, Ann W. and Newton Charles Washington Douthit.
