Astronomer, US Navy Rear Admiral. Born in Wallace, Nova Scotia, Canada, he graduated from Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard in 1858 and joined the Naval Observatory in Washington. He rose through the ranks to Rear Admiral and was appointed the US Congress Secretary of the Commission for the purposes of observing astronomical expeditions in 1874. For the next two decades, he made numerous astronomical discoveries and published more then a hundred books and scientific papers. His astronomical are still to this date used as an International astronomical reference.
