John Dillingham was age 18 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 12, 1862, at Boston, Massachusetts, for a term of one year, as an Ordinary Seaman, to the credit of Boston. He served on the Receiving Ship OHIO and aboard the famous USS HOUSATONIC. He was taken prisoner at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, on September 8, 1863, and incarcerated as a Prisoner of War at Camp Sumter, Andersonville, Georgia. He died of phthisis (a form of tuberculosis) in the hospital at Camp Sumter.
