Per contributor Fred Sanford:

Mr. Lansburgh's brothers, Gustav and James, formed the Lansburgh & Bro Dept store which was a major store in D.C. from 1860 to the 1960s (or thereabouts) in the old downtown area from 7th St to 15th N.W. and from Penn. Ave to New York Ave. roughly. This was the shopping district for many years in D.C.

When Abe Polin built the MCI now Verizon Center he revitalized a decaying former mostly German shopping area from the 1850s. Today it's call the Penn Quarter.

By 1875 Julius started the Julius Lansburgh Furniture Company and bounced around several locations within this shopping area trying to find the best spot. The other two would end up taking much of a whole city block for the department store at one point. When Julius retired from the furniture business, he opened an interior decorating business and ran it until 1928 when he became ill.
