A merchant in county Kent, England, Joshua Atwater was the son of John & Susan (Norson/Narson) Atwater of Lenham, Kent, England and older brother to my ancestor, DAVID ATWATER. He probably came with siblings, David & Ann Atwater on the HECTOR in June of 1637 with Eaton & Davenport. It is believed that he led the first party of six men to New Haven where they spent the first winter before the others came in the spring. He, along with his brother, David Atwater, were founders of New Haven and he of Milford, Conn. although to my knowledge he never lived there. (See plaque at right on the Founder's Bridge over the Wepawaug River in Milford which lists Joshua Atwater as an after planter at Milford).
Many times the New Haven records refer to "Mr. Atwater" .. not knowing if they are referring to Joshua or David. On July 4, 1639, Joshua Attwater, by reason of his weakness was excused from training but agreed to act as a clerk for the New Haven trainband. In 1643, he had received 20 acres from the first division of land (4 acres in the neck, 16 acres in the meadow) and 64 acres from the second division. His estate was worth 300 pounds.
On May 6, 1651, Joshua Atwater married Mary, the only daughter of Rev. Adam Blakeman by Roger Ludlow, Esq. She was not quite 16 years of age. In the will of Adam Blakeman: "Concerning my books, which I intended for my son Benjamin, seeing his thoughts are after another course of life, that his thoughts be not to attend the work of Christ in the ministry, my wish is that my son Joshua Atwater, make his son Joshua a scholar, and fit him for that work. I give unto him all my Latin Books...."
Joshua and Mary had 10 children, two of which are:
Samuel baptized June 20, 1654. (NHVR)
Joshua born April 10, 1658 (MVR), baptized November 21, 1658 (NHC1)
William. born October 18, 1746 in New Haven, CT; died August 8, 1816 aged 70 yrs
When Joshua Atwater removed to Boston probably in 1665, he conveyed to his bother, David, his house and lands in New Haven. This sale did not cover his lot at the souteast corner of Yale quadrangle on which the first building of the college was erected. Joshua sold that lot to William Tuttle and eventually it came into the hands of the First Church of Christ of New Haven who eventually sold it to the trustees for the Collegiate School.
After his death in Boston, his widow married the same year, Rev. John Higginson of Salem, Mass. Joshua Atwater is probably buried in Boston.
