Charlie A. Holmes, eldest son of Joseph W. and Emily J. Bivens Holmes ; born in Salem Community and took the responsibility of raising his siblings after his father died of pneumonia and his mother re-married.
Charlie married Josephine Whitman on Sept. 3, 1891 ( Newton Co. Marrriage Records) Their son, Joe Holmes was born July 19, 1892 and Josephine died a few days later of child-bed fever.
On July 4, 1893 (n Newton Co. Marriage Records), Charlie married Docia West. They acquired a large farm in Old Salem and raised their children: Repthia Holmes Taylor
born 1896; Blewett B. Holmes born 1901; and Richard A. Holmes born 1905; and grandson, Hubert B. Holmes born 1912 there. Pa was a farmer. Walking behind his horse and plow from sun-up to sun-down, he spent his entire life in Old Salem Community. He died at his home of arteriosclerosis at age 80. He was survived by his wife, Docia West Holmes; daughter, Repthia Taylor; sons, Joe, Blewett and Richard Holmes, grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
