John Beyer was born in Pomerania/Prussia, probably in the area now called Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He and his wife, Maria, had two known children: Wilhelmina F. "Minnie" Beyer [Mrs. John Adelbert Ruff] born there in 1853 and Charles Johann Frederick Beyer born 1858 in Bloomington, McLean Co., IL.

In the mid- to late-1870s, the Beyer family removed to Hall County, settling in Lake Precinct where both John and Maria died.
