During WWII, he served as a Private in the 30th Infantry, Medical Detachment. On May 24, 1944, during the Battle of Cisterna, Italy, he suffered a severe head wound from shrapnel and was shipped back to the states. He was awarded A Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters.
