George William Shumate was the son of James H. and Jane Conway Shumate. Born in Virginia, his parents moved their family to Ohio when George was just a small boy. He moved from Ohio to Missouri when he was about fifteen years old, living in Lewis and Clark counties. He married Miss Hannah Dale in Lewis County on March 1, 1849. They moved to Saline County, Missouri, in 1868 with their five sons and three daughters. They made their home in the Fish Creek community. Staunch Baptists, Hannah and George were among the founding members of the First Baptist Church in Marshall, Missouri. Five of their eight children moved west to Colorado and California. George died in Saline County April 12, 1896.
