He was a son of the late Donald and Helen Damon. He was preceded in death, by his wife, Hildegard, and sisters, Sharon and Judy.

Jim graduated from Kokomo High, Kokomo, Indiana, in 1944 and joined the United States Air Force where he served for 4 years. He later joined the United States Army in 1949 and served in the Korean War, where he was cited for saving the lives of several of his fellow soldiers by keeping their position from being overrun. Jim retired from the Army in 1967. After his military retirement Jim was involved in the public and private sector.
