Joe Allison Barnes, age 78, of Cherokee, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008.

Visitation was Saturday at Morrison Funeral Home in Cherokee. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel, with Brother Ricky Collum and Brother L.D. Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Barton Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tim Aaron, B.B. McCalpin, Jack Cochran, Leslie "Bubba" Harrell, Phillip Duncan and Cody Wyatt.

Honorary pallbearers are Kenneth Gilbert, William "Larry" Ussery, Matthew Duncan and Cody McVay.

Mr. Barnes was retired with TVA as a steam fitter and presently active with Local No. 760 Steam Fitters Union, of Muscle Shoals. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of VFW and served on the Cherokee City Council and Water Board and served two terms on the Colbert County Board of Education. He was a member of Cherokee Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Thompson Barnes; son, Tommy Calvin Barnes; mother, Stella Creekmore Barnes; father, Thomas Crawford Barnes Sr.; brothers, Thomas Crawford Barnes Jr., Bill Barnes, Aubrey Britt Barnes; sister, Stella Jean Aaron.

Survivors include son, Randy Joe Barnes, of Cherokee; daughters, Jan Barnes, of Cherokee, and Rita Duncan, of Russellville; brother, Charlie Wade Barnes, of Huntsville, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchldren.
