UNDERWOOD, NORRIS EUGENE, age 79, of Irondale, died March 14, 2006. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mildred (Goodwin) Underwood; daughters Angela (Underwood) Spanos and Tanya Underwood; grandson Shane Ivey; great grandchildren Jonathan Ivey, Rebecca Ivey and Connor Ivey; brothers Horace Underwood and Grant Underwood; and a loving extended family. He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy on transport ship LST-6, along with identical twin brother Horace. Both were aboard but unharmed when LST-6 was sunk by mines in the Seine River, France, in late 1944. Norris and Mildred founded and operated Irondale Fabricating Company and Underwood Steel Company, which conducted wrought-iron construction throughout Alabama. They built jails and bomb shelters across the state, as well as such high-profile projects as the scrolling sign atop the Two North Twentieth Building in downtown Birmingham. In a very active retirement he managed many Irondale industrial and retail properties. He was a deacon at Irondale First Baptist Church, a proud member of the Shriners and Freemasons, and an active supporter of the Republican Party. His generosity, kindness and leadership inspired family, friends and colleagues. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Services will be held at Ridout's Trussville Chapel, 205-655-2173. Visitation will be March 16, 2006 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the funeral service March 17, 2006 at 1:00 p.m.
